Mumu is in my course, and Mariana is currently attending Central Saint Martins until she returns to Brazil in a few months. Everyone had different interpretations for this drawing. My friend told me that the woman looks as if she is letting herself go. She appears to have inner peace though she is about to fall on the ground.

I drew this illustration with a certain woman in my mind. She acts confident and strong but in fact she has the lowest self-esteem you can ever imagine. She needs men to constantly tell her that she is beautiful and desirable. She lays bare without shame or embarrassment. She believes that men idolises her for her "beauty", but in fact men only want her for physical pleasures. She offers her body for all the world to see.

She embraces herself in pleasure, believing that "beauty" is determined by one's outward appearance.

MIND CONTROL!

...but the title is "Mind Control ME" because I believe that some people just let themselves be brainwashed when the truth is in fact evident and unhidden. It was never invisible in the first place.

Ignorance is the worst disease you can ever have. It infects your brain and makes you unable to think or question.

I was commissioned by 3D Product Design Students (Their client: Brockwell Lido) to put my illustrations on their product called Lido Puzzle.

These are the drawings I came up with, that represented Brockwell Lido.

The design students picked two images (the woman diving and the building with the close up image of the clock), and then projected them onto the puzzle boxes (front&back). They traced the projected images with pencil first and then they painted over with acrylic later on. There were ONLY THREE PEOPLE in the group, but they worked really hard to complete this project (I helped to paint as well).

I've been collaborating with my close friend George from New York. We decided to make blog together long time ago because we wanted to create a habit of making new works/ideas every week. The theme we picked for this blog was "Life's Little Moments".

I've been busy so I haven't been consistent with my update... I should really discipline myself to keep up with the deadline.

By the way, George is a great photographer who takes beautiful pictures. I would like to collaborate more projects with him in the future. We used to take photographs together, and that was one of the best moments of my life in New York. I can't wait to hang out with him again when I go back to the U.S.

Streetfest October 2010: Experience

Streetfest was amazing.

I got to paint the stage wall LIVE while musicians like Roll Deep and Crazy Cousinz were performing right behind me. I can't believe I was with them on the same stage. This was better than being in backstage.

I think this was definitely a good experience for me. I love street art, and maybe this influence comes from living in New York City for a long time.

Since this was a live-art event (and this piece will probably be gone by the next Streetfest next year), I tried to paint as quickly as possible. NO COLOUR BLENDING, just hard black outlines with limited colours.

To be honest, I felt like we didn't have enough supplies. We used old markers. I had to use my own black and white acrylic paints for the most part...but we used what we have, and it worked just fine even though I found it a bit difficult to colour in the characters with TINY marker pens that couldn't even fill up the whole white space.

I was quite annoyed when people were ordering me what to do. I wish they could have asked me nicely instead of being extremely irritated. In contrast when I was asking people for help, they looked like they had an annoyed expression on their faces as if I was ordering them when I just wanted to quicken the process to finish the piece (or maybe they were mistaken that I was inconfident or incompetent???).

I learned from this experience to keep it professional and not to show my annoyance and anger even in a slightest form of expression when working with other people.

It's amazing that Adidas sponsored Streetfest to promote originality in London through art and music, as well as promoting their own company (smart advertisement!!). I have to thank Wonda for giving me this great opportunity, chance, and experience. It was a privilege, it really was.

I lived in 3 different cities/countries, so I've decided to capture my experience and my views on my environment/surrounding at the time.

I was born and brought up in Tokyo, Japan. I remember how densely populated Tokyo was. When I was a child, I felt scared and lost to walk in the streets alone. From my point of view as a child, I felt like I was an invisible outsider from another planet.

After spending my childhood in Tokyo, I moved to New York and lived there for 8 years. The grey child in the middle is me, and I am surrounded by different people. In Japan, all I've met were Japanese people. I was surprised to meet people from different countries, all living in the same New York City. In New York, I struggled to find my own identity. I often asked myself, "Does the place of my birth define me? Or is it my nationality that labels who I am?"

I visit South Korea on Holidays. Even though my nationality is Korean, I still don't understand the culture of Korea. My first impression of Seoul, South Korea is that everyone was obsessed with their outward appearances. I was so surprised that Korean people, especially the women, were obsessed with "Beauty" or being beautiful. When I see 50 year old women going on diet, I was confused about what the definition of "Beauty" is in Seoul. The tired woman in this painting represents how Korean women in the city must have felt, always being conscious of how others would look at them (there are eyes in the background).

My first animation in process.
I respect animators even more than ever before... They are the most patient people in the world.
I'll upload my animation in the first week of June (before the deadline).
My own animation project is trying to kill me.... Yes, as you can see, I'm drawing page by page. I'm going to have to scan them all by this week. Putting them together with the Flash program isn't that difficult, it just requires a lot of patience and time.

Starting Life Drawing Again

I used to attend the life drawing class for 5-6 hours every week for 2 years when I lived in New York but I haven't been practising since I moved to London... I'm thinking about starting it again.

I once went to the free life drawing session at my university. I felt like it was my first time drawing the figures so I told myself, "I've lost my touch so I need to practice more from now on" but I couldn't go back because I felt extremely intimidated by the tutor there. She wouldn't leave me alone to correct all my mistakes. It was annoying. I would have listened to her nagging with patience if I actually had been in her drawing class for a long time. Then she had every damn right to tell me that I sucked at drawing.

I was totally disappointed in myself when I went to The Prince's Drawing School on Monday. At least the tutor there was very helpful. She actually gave me a constructive criticism. She indirectly pointed out my mistake so I can notice it by myself. If I didn't notice it, then who cares? That means I need more practice.

I'm going back there every Monday from now on. The only thing I didn't like about this free life drawing session at The Prince's Drawing School???
...I wish it was more than 3 hours.

I'll be posting up my life drawings from now on. I hope I'll see some improvements. I heard that the last class is in the last week of June, but I'll still be drawing from life during the summer (I'll go to the park and draw people... Or maybe draw myself naked??? ahahaha! I'll find some alternatives!!).

A box describing the "I have a dream" by Martin Luther King, Jr.

It was my first time using a typography as a design, in this case, for the black and white covers. The quotes on the white cover are the key points from "I have a dream" speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. As for the box (with imagery) describing the speech, I wanted to give a sense of unity and balance by combining all the images together.
Most of the people had drawn the images on papers, but I got bored with paper so I made cardboard boxes instead. Additionally, all the images formed nicely together (in sequence) and I learned that it can be done effectively with a box!

My Imaginary Map

Ombres Chinoises
Note: "Chinese shadow-puppet shows were known as 'Ombres Chinoises' in Europe-French for Chinese Shadows. They became popular with French & English showmen from about 1850. Shot amusing stories were told using silhouettes cast by solid cardboard figures. Most shadow theatres had closed by around 1860, but Ombres Chinoises were still popular in London until about 1900.

I received a summer project before I started the Illustration Course at my university. The assignment was to illustrate drawings about myself. To be honest, I didn't have enough time to do 25 drawings. The university didn't send the enrollment documents to people (including me) who lived outside of the UK. I found out about it when I was in South Korea through a friend who lived in London, and I told myself that I would rather spend the last few days with my family than do my homework. When I got back to London, I had to move all my stuff by myself to my new accommodation, which took me like more than a week. SO I did 25 drawings in 3 days before the course started. My 25 drawings came out crappy but at the same time, I didn't want to go to the studio empty handed =)

The Hero of This Community

I needed to draw an editorial illustration regarding to the headline that I've chosen, which was "Who do you think works hardest for their community?"

Back when I was still living in NY, there was an old man who nagged at everyone over little things. He thought he was helping the community, and I gave him a credit for that by featuring him in my illustration as the man who works hard for his community...with a superhero costume on.

Don't ever take editorial illustration lightly just because the images appear on mass produced magazines or articles. Some artists make 1,000 thumbnails (drafts) before they make one final image that'll be submitted for an article. It was difficult enough for me to think about the basic elements such as composition, typography, and colours. I only had to make 13 drafts for the class, but I wish I could have made 1,000 thumbnails since I'm not satisfied with this one.

I've done lots of drawings. It's just that I don't have enough time to scan all of them. I've been busy with work and university and blah blah blah, excuses excuses =D I'll probably post them up this week.

That's the facial expression I made when I looked at the mirror after the haircut.

Yes, I got a new haircut. I told the lady to trim it, but instead she chopped my long hair in one SNIP without hesitation and guilt. I was screaming at her like "WHAT THE F%CK ARE YOU DOINNNNNNNG!!!!" at the hair salon, but I instantly loved the new hairdo when I came back home. I'm so happy that I take less time taking shower now. More time drawing!

...I look like a pretty little boy too.

I don't have a scanner at the moment. I will be uploading them soon! Don't mind the flower patterns on my aunt's blanket!

Note:
People have only seen my simplified illustrations of people, objects, etc. That doesn't mean I cannot draw realistically from my imagination. I've continuously drawn nude figures since I was seventeen.

Why have I chosen to only draw cartoony characters at college? I wanted to focus more on narrative rather than skill. It was just a way for me to experiment different ways to express myself.

I still love to draw cartoons/comics but drawing and painting people have always been my passion too.

P.S. - the illustrations I have uploaded on my blog so far are my personal art works created in my personal time before/during/after attending the university. They do not relate to projects given to me at the university.
